Okay, really short Sunday Showdown for me this week due to real writing deadlines coming up and massive amounts of writing that occurred yesterday at the NaNoWriMo all-night write-in.
And believe it or not, I have still not gotten around to watching The Wizard of Oz and Batman Begins – the #10 spot that I was supposed to have done two weeks ago. So this week, I’m going to look at Schindler’s List which shows up as number #8 for AFI and #7 for IMDb.
Schindler’s List is the only movie – besides The Godfather which is tied at #2 for both groups – that shows up in the Top Ten for both AFI and IMDb. That is, of course, a testament to the brilliance of Spielberg’s 1993 finely-crafted masterpiece.
I’m going to write this on the assumption that everyone has seen that little girl in the red coat at least once. It’s certainly not a feel-good movie, so if you’ve only seen it once, that’s forgivable. (Although: see it again! You’ll be glad you did).
Schindler’s List is heartbreaking, powerful, thought-provoking. Well-deserving of being in the Top Ten.
And, as #8 against IMDb’s 12 Angry Men, there’s just no contest. Honestly, for the life of me, I cannot figure out how 12 Angry Men made it into the top ten, especially for IMDb which tends to veer away from the classics. I mean, yeah, Angry Men is good, and probably deserves to be on the top 100 list somewhere. But in the top ten? Um, no. (As a matter of fact it did not even win as #87 against Inglorious Basterds).
But as #7 against AFI’s Lawrence of Arabia, the decision was much more difficult. I’ve talked about Lawrence of Arabia before. When I watched it again this year I was quite impressed with it. It was much more of a compelling film than my memory had given it credit for.
And for all the good I’ve said about Schindler, there are some not-so-good things too. Words like (dare I say them?): inaccurate, manipulative, spoon-feeding, can come to mind.
But despite that, I still have to give my vote to Schindler over Lawrence. Spielberg’s classic just moves me (in ways both bad and good – how I hate to watch that movie) where Lawrence does not. But it was a much closer contest than with 12 Angry Men.
So this brings the score to AFI – 49, IMDb – 43. Next week I will hopefully get to #10 The Wizard of Oz vs. The Dark Knight. If not, definitely Vertigo vs. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Although, my pick for that should be no surpise.
