I consider this weekend a win. Because: 1) I got Book 1 in my Omega Series (out in January 2015) finished and off to the proofer. 2) I lived through my parents' visit. 3) I got both a swim and a bike ride done in my IM training today. 4) I finished all grading for Fall 2013 semester in my day job (college professor).
Unfortunately, I also consider this weekend a lose. Because: 1) I STILL have not watched The Wizard of Oz and The Dark Knight for #10 in the Sunday Showdown.
What can I say? I pretty much haven't done anything for the past three weeks but write the book that was due. My DVR is hovering at 98% full. The only thing that kept it out of 100% was my unquenchable need to watch The Blacklist as soon as that show comes on.
(As an aside: how I feel about The Blacklist is how I should've felt about Joss Whedon's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but instead that show causes me to have fits abo... zzzzzzz.)
I've been saying for weeks about how I wanted to watch both Wizard of Oz and Dark Knight again so I could get a fresh perspective on both and try to judge them more neurally and blah blah blah.
But let's not kid ourselves. There's no way I'm going to give my vote to The Dark Knight over The Wizard of Oz.
The. Wizard. Of. Oz.
Seriously, it's like one of the most beloved, classic films in the history of cinema. It is the epitome of classic -- enthralling audiences every day for nearly 75 years.
So, since I haven't seen them both recently I'll pretend in my mind that Chris Nolan gives Oz a run for it's money with Dark Knight, but I doubt -- once I actually get around to watching them both -- that it will actually be the case.
So, now coming into the Top 4 (since #2 for both lists is The Godfather), AFI has pulled ahead with a runaway lead, 51 to IMDb's 43. Tough break for da masses, but seriously, with films like The Wizard of Oz not even making it into IMDb's Top 100, it's not surprising AFI is winning.
In order to finish the Sunday Showdown in 2013, next week we'll have a double feature: Singin' In the Rain vs. Pulp Fiction and Raging Bull vs. The Good, the Bad & the Ugly. One of those showdowns is pretty east for me. But the other is very, very hard.
