#21: Chinatown vs. Once Upon a Time in the West
I procrastinated (ironically, given my last post) in writing
this showdown because neither of the movies really inspired any depth of
passion in me. And now my line edits for Primal Instinct arrived just moments ago, so a short post today since I’ve
got to get to those.
Chinatown has been
on the list before as IMDb’s #67 and won against Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Which in my opinion just goes to show how
subjective this list is, even within my own brain. Because if I had to choose
between Chinatown and Virginia Woolf right now, I’d choose Virginia Woolf, even though last year I
chose Chinatown. Go figure)

I had never seen Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West, perhaps because I’m not a big fan of
Westerns, perhaps because of its 2 hour 45 minutes running time. I wouldn’t say
I enjoyed the movie, but I could appreciate it for what it was: a love song to
the genre. Stylistic to a fault, it abounds with desperadoes, shoot-outs, violence and
harmonicas.
But speaking of stylistic to a fault, have you met Chinatown? Noir, jaded, disillusioned, Los
Angeles private-eye to the point you can almost taste it. And I still stand by claim that John Huston’s
character is the most evil SOB ever – on every possible level.

Evidently I’m more of a jaded, disillusioned, noir gal than a desperadoes and harmonicas one. So, although
both can be considered timeless classics, I give my vote to Chinatown over Once Upon a Time in the West.
So this brings the score to: AFI - 45, IMDb - 37. Next week: #18 - The General vs. City of God. I find it hard to believe that City of God can beat the Buster Keaton marvel. But we'll see.
